How Lemonade sets your renewal price

Lemonade lists four reasons a renewal price can go up. The first is your pet's age, since older pets need vet care more often and it costs more. The others are rising vet and treatment costs, changes across the pet insurance industry, and inflation. Lemonade says your pet's age and vet costs in your area are the biggest factors.

Lemonade's rate changes also show up in state rate filings. The filings in the table below show the average change Lemonade asked a state for, or got approved. Your own renewal can land well above or below that average.

When your renewal notice arrives

A Lemonade Pet policy renews automatically one year after its start date. Lemonade says it emails the new policy about a month before renewal, so you can review the price first. You can ask for changes as soon as that email arrives.

You have 14 days after renewal to add coverage, such as a lower deductible, a higher limit or an add-on. After that your coverage is locked in for the year. Waiting periods do not restart at renewal.

From public state insurance rate filings (state DOI lists and SERFF) and news reports that quote them. Where we have the regulator's own record we link it first; "(summary)" links a news write-up. A filed average is across all policyholders, so one pet's increase can be very different.

Ways to lower the price without switching

Lemonade documents these ways to bring a renewal price down. Each one trades away some coverage or needs you to qualify.

  • Choose a higher deductible.
  • Lower your co-insurance, the share of each eligible bill Lemonade pays.
  • Lower your annual limit.
  • Remove or change Preventative Care packages or add-ons.
  • Pay for the full year at renewal. Lemonade lists up to 5% off, and the $1 monthly transaction fee goes away.
  • Cover more than one pet for up to 10% off, or bundle another Lemonade policy for up to 10% off.

Discounts may not be offered in every state, and changes need underwriting approval. In most states you can lower coverage at any time in the Lemonade app. That is not available in New Hampshire or California. If you lower coverage, you might not be able to raise it again later.

Do claims raise your rate?

No. Lemonade says filing claims will never result in a rate change to your Lemonade Pet policy. Price changes come from the factors above, mainly age and local vet costs.

Common questions

How much is Lemonade raising prices?

We don't have enough owner reports for Lemonade yet to give a reliable number. Adding yours helps everyone.

Why did my Lemonade premium go up?

Most pet insurers raise premiums each year as your pet ages, and also when vet costs rise in your area. Increases are filed with state regulators, which is why they vary by state.

Should I switch from Lemonade?

Here is what typically changes when you move to a new insurer. A new policy usually treats any condition your pet already has, or had recently, as pre-existing and excludes it. New policies typically start with waiting periods before accident and illness coverage begins. The new premium is priced on your pet's current age, plus the deductible and reimbursement level you pick.
