About RenewalDog
RenewalDog tracks pet insurance renewal increases. We show what owners report paying and what insurers file with state regulators.
Where the numbers come from
Owner reports. Pet owners enter their old and new monthly premium at renewal. We compute the percent change and show medians (not averages, so one extreme case can't skew things). An insurer's figure appears once it has 5 or more reports.
Rate filings. Insurers file rate changes with state regulators. We summarize public filings and link to the source. A filed average is across all policyholders, so your increase can be very different.
Moderation. Very unusual entries (for example, increases over 200% or price drops over 50%) are held for review before they count. We limit repeat entries from the same connection.
Editorial policy
- Every number has a source. Each filed rate change links to where we found it. We prefer the regulator's own record. When we can't reach it, we cite the news report or insurer page that quotes the filing and say so.
- We don't estimate. If a figure isn't published, we leave it out. Pages say "collecting data" until there are 5 owner reports.
- We show dates. Insurer and state pages show when they were last updated. Insurer explainers show when we last checked their sources.
- No advice. We're not an insurance agent or broker. We don't tell anyone to buy, keep or switch a policy.
- Corrections. When a source changes or we find a mistake, we fix the page and its updated date changes.
Privacy
We don't ask for your name, email, or policy number. We store a one-way scrambled version of your IP address only to prevent spam. We never see or keep the address itself.
Independence
Insurers can't pay to change their numbers.
