How Trupanion sets your renewal price

Trupanion prices a policy from enrollment factors. Its sample policy lists your pet's age at enrollment, breed, gender and the local cost of vet care. Its pricing flyer adds your deductible and any additional coverage. The age that counts is the age when you enrolled, not your pet's age today.

Trupanion's price can still change over time. The sample policy says the monthly premium may go up or down as the overall cost of vet care changes for pets with your enrollment factors. Its "How We Price" flyer adds that these trends usually come from more use of vet services, and sometimes from inflation, new technology and new procedures. Moving to a new address and changing your coverage also change the price.

When your renewal notice arrives

Trupanion bills monthly and the policy renews each month while payments are current. So there is no single renewal date for price changes. The sample policy says price changes happen no more than once a year and will not exceed 20%. Trupanion says it will tell you in writing, by mail or email, at least 30 days before a change takes effect.

From public state insurance rate filings (state DOI lists and SERFF) and news reports that quote them. Where we have the regulator's own record we link it first; "(summary)" links a news write-up. A filed average is across all policyholders, so one pet's increase can be very different.

Ways to lower the price without switching

Trupanion documents a few levers on its own price.

  • Raise your deductible. Trupanion says you can increase it at any time, and your monthly price changes when you do. Conditions that started before the change need to meet the new, higher deductible.
  • Remove optional coverage. The flyer lists adding or removing additional coverage as a change that moves the price.

Lowering the deductible later is limited. Trupanion allows that only in the first 30 days after you enroll. Adding a rider or lowering the deductible after enrollment starts new waiting periods for that added coverage.

Do claims raise your rate?

No. Trupanion's sample policy says your premium will not change because your pet ages or because of your pet's own claims. The flyer puts it plainly, saying your price won't change due to the number of claims you file. Changes come from vet cost trends for pets like yours.

Common questions

How much is Trupanion raising prices?

We don't have enough owner reports for Trupanion yet to give a reliable number. Adding yours helps everyone.

Why did my Trupanion premium go up?

Most pet insurers raise premiums each year as your pet ages, and also when vet costs rise in your area. Increases are filed with state regulators, which is why they vary by state.

Should I switch from Trupanion?

Here is what typically changes when you move to a new insurer. A new policy usually treats any condition your pet already has, or had recently, as pre-existing and excludes it. New policies typically start with waiting periods before accident and illness coverage begins. The new premium is priced on your pet's current age, plus the deductible and reimbursement level you pick.
