How Healthy Paws sets your renewal price

Healthy Paws says its premiums follow the rates and rating rules filed with, and approved by, each state's insurance regulator where approval applies. Those rates reflect the cost of treatment advances in vet medicine. They also reflect your pet's breed, gender and age, and other factors.

One factor is the program's overall claims experience in the region where your pet lives. So when claims rise across your area, prices for everyone there can rise too.

When your renewal notice arrives

Healthy Paws doesn't publish one notice period for every state. Its state endorsements set some of them. In New York, Healthy Paws must give at least 60 days' notice, and a premium change only takes effect on the policy's annual anniversary date. In South Carolina, it must give at least 60 days' notice before an increase. Check the endorsement for your state, which is part of your policy documents.

From public state insurance rate filings (state DOI lists and SERFF) and news reports that quote them. Where we have the regulator's own record we link it first; "(summary)" links a news write-up. A filed average is across all policyholders, so one pet's increase can be very different.

Ways to lower the price without switching

Healthy Paws lists these ways to lower your monthly premium.

  • Raise your deductible.
  • Lower your reimbursement level.
  • Move from unlimited reimbursement to an annual limit, or lower your annual limit.

There are rules. You can change the annual limit once per 12-month term, and only before you file a claim in that term. Once you lower it, the annual limit can never go back up. If you have filed any claims, you can only change coverage in the direction that lowers the price.

Do claims raise your rate?

Not your own claims. Healthy Paws says premium increases are not based on your individual claim submissions. Its New York endorsement says coverage, premium, coinsurance and deductible will not change because of your pet's claims experience. Claims across the whole program in your region do feed into prices, as described above.

Common questions

How much is Healthy Paws raising prices?

We don't have enough owner reports for Healthy Paws yet to give a reliable number. Adding yours helps everyone.

Why did my Healthy Paws premium go up?

Most pet insurers raise premiums each year as your pet ages, and also when vet costs rise in your area. Increases are filed with state regulators, which is why they vary by state.

Should I switch from Healthy Paws?

Here is what typically changes when you move to a new insurer. A new policy usually treats any condition your pet already has, or had recently, as pre-existing and excludes it. New policies typically start with waiting periods before accident and illness coverage begins. The new premium is priced on your pet's current age, plus the deductible and reimbursement level you pick.
