How Embrace sets your renewal price
Embrace's help center lists four reasons a price can change at renewal.
- Base rate. All premiums in your state rise by the same percentage, based on a risk assessment by Embrace's underwriter. Vet cost inflation is part of the base rate. Embrace says its rates are filed with, and approved by, each state's department of insurance as required.
- Discounts. Embrace and each state review discounts every year. If a discount is no longer approved or offered, it comes off at renewal and the price goes up.
- Your pet's age. Older pets tend to need more frequent and more costly vet care.
- Trends in the pet population. Some breeds become more prone to costly conditions over time, and premiums reflect that shared risk.
During the policy term, the price can also change when you move, add or remove pets, or change coverage.
When your renewal notice arrives
Embrace says you get an email with your renewal premium a few weeks before the renewal date. In your MyEmbrace account you can choose to change coverage now or only as of your renewal. Online changes are not possible within 5 days of the renewal date, so make them before that.

Ways to lower the price without switching
Embrace lists these ways to reduce your premium at any time.
- Increase your annual deductible.
- Lower your annual maximum.
- Lower your reimbursement percentage, through "Change Coverage" in MyEmbrace.
- Remove exam fee or prescription coverage, where your state allows it.
Embrace warns that exam fee and prescription coverage cannot be added back without a full rewrite of the policy and new waiting periods. Raising coverage later in general means re-underwriting. Waiting periods reset, and anything that started before the upgrade counts as pre-existing.

Common questions
How much is Embrace raising prices?
We don't have enough owner reports for Embrace yet to give a reliable number. Adding yours helps everyone.
Why did my Embrace premium go up?
Most pet insurers raise premiums each year as your pet ages, and also when vet costs rise in your area. Increases are filed with state regulators, which is why they vary by state.
Should I switch from Embrace?
Here is what typically changes when you move to a new insurer. A new policy usually treats any condition your pet already has, or had recently, as pre-existing and excludes it. New policies typically start with waiting periods before accident and illness coverage begins. The new premium is priced on your pet's current age, plus the deductible and reimbursement level you pick.
